Volvo Steering Stops in Questions
Volvo S40 Steering shakes while driving at highway speeds? I am starting to really get frustrated here. I have been bouncing back and forth between the tire dealer and Volvo for the better part of today. Let me back up.. I brought the car to 05/01 for severe shaking and humming noise, they told me I need 4 tires, I bought 4 tires, and the problem didn't stop. Went back they said change the fuel filter and spark plugs. Again to no avail. Went back 3rd time was a charm... I needed new left and right front axles. Got the car back yesterday and still have an issue with shaking. Got tires re-balanced and another alignment. Still didn't fix it. Also noticed that the cotter pin was missing on front axles. Volvo Said they don't use them, sent me on my way back to tire place. Got new tires 2 weeks after 1st set and still the steering wheel shakes at highway speeds. Tire place said it's not the tires its the car.. Volvo Said not the car the tires. Any suggestions here?

Mr. KnowItAll replied: "Go back to the tire place and insist the test drive your car, or take them for a ride yourself to show them EXACTLY what it's doing."

dom_ursini replied: "1st it's time to take it somewhere else, it seem like your tire are not blanced correctly or you have a supension problem, i would take it to some who knows what they are doing.."

shendoo o replied: "Go back to the tire place and insist the test drive your car, or take them for a ride yourself to show them EXACTLY what it's doing."

JoyB replied: "The initial shaking was probably a problem w/car, not tires. My S40 had to have left axle replaced, and after the repair had prob/w steering I mean the car veered off into the opposite direction and I almost crashed. I took it back and it turned out that the parts dept. sent a right axle, which looks very similar, but can be a dangerous mistake. I would ask them to make sure they didn't mistake the rt for the lft axle. I also had trouble w/ the dealer and ended up going to another mechanic who is better and cheaper than volvo. Your car is probably under warranty, and if that's why you're going to the dealer I can understand, but I'd suggest having someone else take a look at it even if you have to shell out 75 bucks or so for another assessment. I don't know what else could be causing the shaking. Another idea would be to go online and find a Volvo forum. There are a bunch of them, here's one"

whtsthislif4 replied: "Tires out of balance. Doubt it if they just changed them Bent rim? The tire shop should have caught that when they balanced the tires...So I doubt it. Worn out steering dampener... attaches from the frame to your steering linkage. When these are bad it doesn't just look like its bad. The dampener looks like a small shock absorber. Un bolt it"if it's equipped with one" from one side. Then push the rod in and out of the shock looking cylinder while the other end is still attached to the car. If it's easy to slide it in and out that's your problem. It should be hard to push in and out! It won't look like it's bad. You have to check it like I just described. Half off the car or fully removed. I'm pretty sure your car has one of these steering dampeners on it. And I bet this is what all those mechanics are over looking if your car has one. It's a cheap part too in comparison to tires and other components."

volvo 850 questions! problems everywhere? i have a volvo 850 automatic and i have some questions: 1. the steering is REALLY loud whenever im driving and turn at all it makes a lot of noise..what is this and how can it be fixed? 2. the check engine light has been on for a very long time like 4 months and the car has been runnning fine..but today it started to blink and while i am at stop lights and the car is idling it is idling funny and accelerating by itself a little and it is on and off. how can i fix this? or how much does it cost to fix this? 3. my brakes only squeak when im about to be at a full stop..so when im coming down a hill to a red light i begin to brake and its not squeaky but when im about to be fully stopped thats when they start to squeak like when im going 10mph or under.

Jake replied: "1. Add power steering fluid or replace the power steering pump. 2. Go to the Volvo dealer, they will scan for codes. It doesn't matter how well your car is running, there is still an internal problem. Or go to auto zone and they will scan for codes for free. I don't know if they will erase them though. 3. Brake pads need replacing."

Lloyd C replied: "1. First check your fluid level and make sure to use the appropriate fluid. 2. When the light blinks it usually indicates a cylinder misfire that is not correcting itself and will damage your catalytic converter. Thus the funny idle. You need to address this right away. 3. Usually the squeak can be taken out by applying never seize to the back of your brake pads."

'99 Volvo ABS Issues ??? I have a '99 Volvo S80. Several months ago, I had the brakes done by a non Volvo brake shop. Right after driving out of their place, the ABS light came on. I drove back to them but they said they didn't do anything with them. It seemed coincidental to me that it "all of a sudden" came on. Anyway, since then, it has been intermittent. Sometimes I get warning messages saying "brake failure, stop ASAP", "Stc svc needed" "transmission svc needed" "power steering svc needed" basically all at random. Some days, I get none of these messages. Some days, when all the warnings are displayed, the transmission stays in 4th gear and I have to shift manually. Dealer says ABS module, for $900 is the problem. I noticet recently, while trying to tune in a strong local AM station, that there was tons of static while all the warning messages were displayed. The car sitting next to me was able to tune in the same station clearly. I'm wondering if this is an indication of shorting...any ideas??

Brad G replied: "Its definately shorting probably on a ground circuit. The problem is that a modern car has almost a mile (I DO MEAN 5280FEET) of wire and dozens of grounding points and over a hundred wire connectors to check!! Start with making sure the battery connections are spotlessly clean and go from there!! GOOD LUCK"

A Gendarme stops a motorist? Bonjour Monsieur, you just drove straight through a STOP sign. I have to write you a ticket. But as today I am in a good mood, I will offer you a chance to get off. The motorist: Ah, really? What must I do? The Gendarme : I will ask you two questions...If you answer any one correctly, I will forget about your ticket! The motorist : OK! The Gendarme : Here's the first one: What has an engine, four wheels and a steering wheel? Motorist : A car! The Gendarme : Yes... but a Toyota, a Volvo, a Mercedes?.. Sorry, I can't consider your response as correct. So I will ask you a second question... Now concentrate! What has an engine, just two wheels, and has handlebars? Motorist : A motorcycle! The Gendarme : Yes... but a Suzuki, a Honda, a Kawasaki?.. Terribly sorry, but I must now write you a ticket. The Gendarme, satisfied, gives him his ticket. As he is about to leave, the motorist asks in an ironic tone: Can I also ask you a question? The Gendarme: But of course! The motorist: What paces up and down the footpath in a leather mini-skirt with a handbag slung over her shoulder and is chewing gum? The Gendarme: Why, a hooker! The motorist: Yes... but your sister, your mother, your aunt?

Volvo V70 vibration when slowing? 1999 V70, 154000 miles. Check engine light is on with o2 sensor code. When slowing a vibration starts that shakes the steering wheel. First thought was brakes, nada. Maybe transmission is staying locked up, still happens when rolling to a stop in Neutral. Does not do it when parked and reving the engine... just when slowing down at at approx 15-20 mph. Fast vibration almost like a buzzing but shakes the steering wheel a good 1/4"

Sophie B replied: "bad front tire... probably has a tread separation......"

DeSaxe replied: "From 7000 miles away not being able to see or here what it is doing this is something you may want to check out. what do you people think of the Volvo accident-proof car? is it really possible to ensure it is 100% operational? would you drive it? will it be fully automated or will manual steering & control option be available as well? i think it is a great idea but in cases where you would drive around an obstacle the car might stop instead, if it does so all the time, it would be irritating... and i think this problem might take a long time to completely fix, and is the car going to be affordable? the S60 model coming out next month in the detroit auto show and gonna be available for in the market by 2010

carguy0035 replied: "It's like Hondas new Goldwing motorcycle with a airbag. BAD IDEA!!!!!!"

Jake replied: "The one that will be made by 2020? Or the one that can prevent an accident coming out next year?"

VOLVO_CHICK replied: "would never buy the first year of anything. also, with recent experience with Volvo on recall and warranty issues trying to get fixed is like pulling teeth with them.. i feel that all these car companies need to prove to us what they are doing is worth are money and not a waste of it. so we can give them more of tax payers loans. as for the car accident proof right = what about the other drivers anyone take that into consideration? as we like to say in the commercials the Human Factor. You decide me I'll buy a GM over a Volvo because of their customer service and I have had 7 Volvo."

Archangel replied: "No such thing as an accident proof car...just help you avoid them. As others have said, you always have to watch out for the other person. For instance, what's to stop someone from rear ending you at a traffic light? Contrary to one of your other posters, I too have had 3 Volvos and have had EXCELLENT service where I live. My father is on his second one and they even come by the house to pick his up for service now (leaves him a new loaner as well) and have had no problems with warrantied service. That said, Since they are currently (barely) owned by Ford, some of the quality has dropped off...especially in the lower models. My current vehicle had the drivers side mirror just fall off for no reason while leaving a parking lot. My vehicle is no longer under warranty so that cost me about $150 in parts....Ouch!"

Gengras Motorcars replied: "Actually, it is not "accident proof", it is called Accident Avoidance and will be available on the XC60 late this winter. Basically, it is ide3al for those of us who drive in city traffic a lot. How it works is as follows: Active between 2-19 MPH. From 19-10 MPH, if the vehicle senses that you will collide with the vehicle in front of you, it will drastically reduce your speed by applying brake pressure automatically which reduces damage to both your car and the other drivers. From 9-2 MPH, the same technology will literally STOP your vehicle if you get within inches of the other vehicle avoiding an accident all together. The whole system is run on a Laser guidance and is very reliable and tested. Volvo has been researching and perfecting this technology for over 10 years and would not have released it if it wasn't ready and reliable. I have actually been able to test this out as Volvo brought 3 XC60's to my dealership back in October. I drove one of them to my detail department and, forgetting about the Accident Avoidance System, got a little to close to the garage door. The vehicle came to a jarring stop without me applying the brake. This system works and I highly recommend it."

My brakes go to the floor every once in a while (say 6 weeks).? I got new pads and one new rotor (for the rear driver tire) in March and the above problem occurs. Today, I stepped on it at about 40 mph (and my car was all up in smoke) and almost didn't stop. Just before then, I noticed at top speed (60mph), the steering wheel was vibrating so bad. Is it tires? Bad (new) pads? Bad brake job? Brake master cylinder (which is not leaking)? or what exactly makes the brakes work when they want? Right now, I pumped my brakes and they are "hard." I almost got into a crash some few moments ago. It's a 740 Volvo 1990. Thank you!

sal replied: "A low brake pedal that has to be pumped repeatedly to bring a vehicle to a stop may be due to a low fluid level, drum brakes that need adjustment or air in the lines. If the fluid reservoir is full and the brakes are properly adjusted, but the pedal is low (or feels spongy), there is probably air in the brake lines. If you drive a stick shift i recommend you down shift and brake so you wont wear the brakes as much and go to midas they are good!!"

cbr1000rr replied: "hey i got a 82 volvo wagon i had that problem and i found that i had a leak in brake fluid not a big one but one just big enough to let air in youre line call a shop and have them tow your car to thier shop and replace all youre brake parts and lines this can only be fixed if you replace them"

sheloves_dablues replied: "Sounds like the master cylinder to me.... does your car roll forward when you are stopped at a light and have your foot on the brake? It's not the brake pads or shoes. Something is causing you to loose brake pedal pressure.. Get it checked by a mechanic.."

al_sheda replied: "I would strongly suspect your brake master cylinder. To verify this, start your car, leave it in 'park' and press and hold down on the brake pedal. If the pedal starts inching down slowly, you must replace either the kit or the complete master cylinder. With a defective master cylinder you will note the brake fluid does not deplete. With pumping, if the brakes become hard, it is definitely a faulty brake master cylinder."

wanda p replied: "Did they bleed your brakes when you got new brake shoes? That could be the problem. If they did its probably the mastercylinder. Check and see if you have brake fluid in it."

celeste c replied: "Check the brake fluid"

jon_wayne89 replied: "OMG , EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE , TAKE IT IN AND GET IT FIXED , YOU HAVE AIR IN THE LINES , THEY NEED TO BE BLEED OUT HOW CAN YOU KEEP DRIVING A CAR THAT THE BRAKES GO OUT , EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE !!!! ???? EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE A KID COULD RUN OUT IN FRONT OF YOU !!!! EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE A CAR COULD CUT YOU OFF AND STOP !!!!!...... PLEASE TAKE IT BACK TO WHO FIXED IT !!!!!!!!"

What could be going on with my car? my car was running fine but tonight after stopping at a stop sign, my car wouldn't accelerate, the steering wheel locked, and all the lights on the dashboard turned on (check engine light, coolant, battery, etc.) and i just got my car fixed with more coolant, an oil change, new battery, new rodors, and new tires. My car is a 1993 volvo rst. What could be going on?

John replied: "Did you check to see if the serpentine belt had broken?"

joepinapplz replied: "sounds like an electrical problem, did the car engine turn off??"

schuhaaron replied: "what sounds did it make? how fast where u goin previously? did u leak ANY fluids?"

Rubbery popping noise while turning? Hello, I have a '96 Volvo 850 and my steering has recently developed a rubbery popping noise when turning. This noise is directly proportional to how fast the wheel is being turned and NOT the car's speed. The noise occurs intermittently, but when it does occur it can be heard while driving, while in park and even when the car is off and you forcibly turn the steering wheel. I believe it is coming from the driver's side. The one day i had to jack it up and look at it, it decided to stop making the noise even on the ground. I'm thinking it has something to do with the lower ball joint or tie-rod end. The outer CV boot is ripped and am well aware of the type of clicking noise a CV boot makes, as I had to replace the passenger side axle due to this noise and this is not the same type of noise.. And I am planning on replacing the driver's side axle as soon as I get home from school. Any ideas would be great! The car does not have an upper ball joint and I just replaced the strut mounts along with the struts on both sides myself within the last year. I have also replaced both sway bar links and the control arm/ball joint on the passenger side. When listening outside the car it sounds like it is coming from the wheel itself and not the strut mount. Thanks!

Philips replied: "Dont fix it you are wasting your money . Is normal"

jnc623 replied: "Could be bad lower ball joints. The lube drys out and causes the joint to make noise. After a short period of time they will develop play(wear) in them that could lead to failure. Get the front end checked at a shop ."

What do you think of my writing? Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated! Harper Bridgery glared out at the clean pink sky, spread out in the small space of his window, and sighed as loud as he could. “Shut up.” his sister, Susan, mumbled into her bent knees. Harper crossed his arms and muttered, “You shut up.” “Please stop.”His mother, Jane Bridgery, pleaded in front of him. She buried her face in her pillow against the window and tried to fall back asleep. Harper looked at the gravely road beneath the family Volvo. It whizzed by, its deep brown color glowing with the warm evening sunlight. He shifted his weight and scowled at the back of his mother’s seat. He took a long breath and sighed even louder. The blond boy sitting on the far left of the seat he was sharing with his siblings yanked out his white earphones. He reached behind Susan and shoved his brother into the warm window. Harper yelped and shoved his brother back. Jane turned around and glowered. “Stop it now.” “But Royal pushed me!” Harper protested his voice cracking. Susan dug her face further into her knees. “Retard.” Royal shoved his brother again. “Royal!” Jane scolded. Harper smirked and a satisfied humph sounded in his throat. Royal shoved him into the door with a loud thud. “OUCH!” “Royal!” His mother rebuked. “What?!” “Stop yelling!” Susan begged into her legs. Harper flicked his sister’s head. “OUCH!” “Harper!” Jane, glared at him. “Ha, ha!” Royal mocked, sneering at his younger brother. Susan yanked her head up and hit his shoulder with her fist. “Hey!” ”Ha, ha!” Harper taunted. “Cut it out!” Jane yelled, attempting to hit a laughing Harper with her pillow. “Thank you!” Susan yelled. Royal shoved her for being so loud. “Owwwww!” “Will everyone please be quiet for one second?!” Bernard Bridgery suddenly hissed. His massive hands clenched the steering wheel and his face went a deep shade of purple. Only the sound of the Volvo’s engine was heard. Harper leaned against the back of his mother’s seat and stared out the window. Susan buried her face again, and Royal frowned at his hands. No one spoke for the rest of the trip. Thank you for the advice on the Jane/Mom. I went back and read it again and realized that it WAS kind of confusing. I will change that in my next revision. =)

pointyears replied: "Elementary, but it has a chance..."

o.0yesh? replied: "Don't switch between Jane and Mom."

kungphookitty replied: "I like it very much. You captured a realness in the characters and the scene reminds me of car rides with my brother. Actually I don't have any criticism to make and I definitely want to hear more!"

Jade replied: "wow i think its really good!!! It shows how kids really do act and i like it!"

sarah replied: "it actually wasn't bad...try not to switch between Jane and Mom bc that's confusing but overall I really enjoyed it...you have a nice tone and realness to your writing :)"

anonymous replied: "Storywrite.com. Sorry, I didn't read it or have any criticism for it. Answers just doesn't seem the appropriate place for this. Sexy Sadie replied: "What is the point of this scene? It seems like a lot of rambling just to fill space. If it is being told from Harper's POV, then it should be "mom" or "mother" and not "Jane". And you don't need to tell us what her last name is. Other than that, I can't really comment because I don't see this going anywhere."

EllaFITZ replied: "It seems pretty real; like something like that could really happen. I liked the descriptiveness of your writing."

amydude84 replied: "I couldn't see any point in this scene. You seem to know HOW to write, but the writing didn't grab me in anyway."

RenZenZen replied: "I think it was very good. Although I don't think you have to say the last names of the parents, Mother & Father, Mom & Dad...they work fine. The scene was very good though. I have siblings & remember the unpleasant car rides with them. Brings back funny memories... I'd like to read more of your writing. ^^"

Righter replied: "Keep writing, this sounds good. Have you joined a writing community? I'm on a free writing site called They have great features for receiving feedback. They have a private writing area - which i use all the time! It really easy and organized. Worth checking out!"
