99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo timing belt or chain? I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Inline-6 4.0 liter. I have asked around to find out if it has timing belt or chain. It has 95K miles on it and would like to make sure I get it changed if it has a belt. Does anyone know if it has a belt or chain? If chain, do I need to do anything to it? Thank you.

How do I do the timing belt on a 93 jeep sport cherokee? My water pump in my 93 jeep cherokee is shot. i wanna replace it myself but do not know how to dot he timing belt. Does anyone know? i would really appreciate your help.

maralex_inc replied: "This Jeep does not have a timing belt. The overhead single cam is driven by a chain that lasts for the life of the car. No replacement ever needed unless you are doing a full engine rebuild."

timothy p replied: "Get a shop manual. You shouldn't have to do anything to the timing chain."

Bill S replied: "Doesn't have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. Usually they don't need to be replaced, but they should be inspected for excess slack as the chain will stretch over time. If there's too much slack in the chain it will eventually jump the cogs and knock the engine out of time, or may eventually fail, so its best to check it on high mileage engines. However under most cases they don't need replaced."

lifes brutal, suck it up replied: "I think you thinking of the serpentine belt. Rubber belt between the fan and motor... you need to lossen the horizontal bolt below the power steering pump. 13mm wrench I think."

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Timing Belt replacement duration? Hi there guy's and gal's. I have a 1998 I6 JGC with high miles but has been great, I'm looking into getting a 2006 V6 JGC and would like to know about the timing belt replacement time frame to change and the hassle involved in changing this out. I do hear or rather read some problems or quirks with the transmission on these newer models.

sprinkles replied: "it does not have a timing belt, it has a chain. you do not have to replace it at a ceratin mileage. as far as the transmission, it has been used since 1999 model year with almost no problems."

doane_nut replied: "How often did you replace it on your '98?"

chrysti g replied: "listen to sprinkles, hes right"

How much would it cost to replace a timing belt/chain on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee? More below:? Jeep has 128k miles 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4 door The cruise control don't work. I'm female. I was wondering whenever the Jeep need a new timing belt/chain, about how much would it cost me? How long (many years) can I go without replacing it? Anyone know any other concerns I should have before buying this Jeep? I know nothing about cars. Thank you. I forgot this info V-6 4X4

Lover not a Fighter replied: "If you have timing CHAIN, they don't need to be replace. If you have timing BELT, you are WAY over due. The recommended period is 60K miles. As for how much, that depends what part of the country you live (and whether you take it to the dealer or an independent shop). === Call a local dealership and ask them. That will immediately give you (1) how much is the MAX (2) if you have a chain or a belt. Good Luck..."

iwingameover replied: "It's likely a 4.0L STRAIGHT 6 not a V. It has a chain and it does not need replaced. 128,000 miles is just barely broken in for those motors. Mine has 265,000 on it and I drive it every day."

dylansmom25 replied: "dont buy a jeep .. Jeeps are crappy SUVS I had an 03 with 22,000 miles on it it was in the shop more than I drove it... timing belts if they break can ruin your whole engine... I wouldnt suggest buying this ..."

TickTick replied: "We'll I don;t kbnow what the last person was talking about! Jeeps are a way of life its not just a another rig! You get your hands on one take care of it and it'll take care of you for the rest your life and take you ANYWHERE YOU WANT TO GO ON THIS EARTH!!! I have an 01 Jeep XJ 4x4 Sport! and its a beast! TAKE CARE OF IT AND IT"LL TAKE CARE OF YOU! Any money you put into it will be worth the hassel!"

doane_nut replied: "The Jeep straight six (not a V6) is bullet proof and does not need it's timing chain changed at that low mileage. It does not use a belt, those are reserved primarily for Jap crap cars."

How much do you thing it would cost to replace the timing belt in a 1999 Jeep Cherokee?? Mine is getting close to the 100K point, so I figure it may be due for a new timing belt. How much do you think it should cost to replace? Also, can I put this off for a while if the Cherokee is still running fine? Thanks!

Court replied: "i'm not real sure if this does you any good at all, but i have a 99 Honda Accord and a new timing belt is gonna cost me around $500. May be somewhere in that range."

doane_nut replied: "$0. Belts are used mostly on crappy little Japanese 4 bangers. Your Jeep uses a chain with sprockets. Much less maintenance required."

Seopard replied: "For some reason I think you've a timing chain rather than a belt? Is it a 4.0 engine? In any event it'll be quite expensive; however my view is (assuming you want to keep the car) get it done at Chrysler. That way you'll know all the parts (cogs, shoes etc) associated with the chain have been replaced and you'llnbe good for another 70K. To replace any chain on worn running gear is not good; this rapidly exacerbates chain wear."

jim b replied: "If you have a 4.0L there is no timing belt"

cuervo25_1 replied: "Doane has it ,there is no jeep, any year ,any engine that has a belt. don't worry about it your jeep will act up way before the chain completely goes so you will have a warning.Unlike belts that wil snap and destroy a good engine without warning."

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD Limited timing belt or a chain? Hi, I just want to know if my 2003 (53 plate) UK Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD Limited, has a timing belt or a chain. I have checked my owners manual and it doesnt say. Thanks.

deljack05 replied: "Just about certain that they have timing chains."

Dave replied: "Gear drive system. Chains and/or gears are not accurate enough for a diesel injection pump. It uses a direcct gear drive system which requires no maintenance outside of regular oil changes."

Seahorse replied: "It has a timing belt"

Do i have to change the timing belt on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2000, V8 , 4x4 with 125 k ? ok I understand, But Do I Have To ?

john m replied: "its a chain. and you can if you want. its called preventative maintanence."

pickupman82 replied: "You dont have too, but if you let it go and it comes apart it will cause more damage and cost more to fix than it would cost to replace the timing belt/chain. Chains are less likely to break than belts so more than likely you will be fine, but they do wear out over time. Mike... look up this part #.. 1 3300 2977 1 I bet it says Timing Chain.. and it's for a 4.0 liter. By the way it's under a cover so you wouldn't see it by just popping the hood."

Mike replied: "i dont know what these previous posters drive, but ive never seen a chain under the hood of any car. it is called a timing BELT, not chain. if you're car works fine and theres no visible tear, you dont have to. "Dont fix somethin that aint broken" if it seems old and damaged, replace it. it doesnt cost much and is quite easy to do"

MIchael J replied: "Your Jeep has a chain. It dose not need Replacement. The guy who said it has a timing belt doesn't have a clue and should not be giving advice. It dose have a serp belt for the accessories, but no timing belt, it has a timing chain. Just change your oil regularly and you'll be fine."

Grainov Truth replied: "It is a chain, and you would worry about those things wearing out to the point of possible breakage at 200K. It would not hurt to replace it then."

snatsu replied: "v8s are chain driven on jeeps no need to replace unless streched"

Mike J replied: "Short answer: no. Long answer: The 99 through 04 V8 powered WJ vehicles are powered by the 4.7L engine. The engine runs off of three separate timing chains that are there for the life of the engine. Do they sometimes fail? Yes but they are not preventive maint. type of services. You will notice a rattling type noise when you start the veh and sometimes while running it if the chains start to go. This does not happen often. The poster that said to keep changing your oil is correct. That $20 you spend on your oil change is the best insurance you can buy for your engine."
